Anxiety and stress aren’t just human problems — they can affect our dogs too. Whether it’s triggered by loud noises, separation, or changes in routine, canine anxiety can disrupt their quality of life and leave pet owners searching for solutions. One natural anxiety remedy gaining popularity is CBD. But how does it work, and is it safe for your dog?
Signs of Anxiety in Dogs
Recognizing anxiety in dogs is the first step to addressing it. Some common signs include:
- Excessive barking or whining
- Lots of panting, even without exercise
- Destructive behavior, such as chewing furniture
- Pacing, trembling, or hiding
- Loss of appetite
- Over-grooming or licking
If your dog exhibits these behaviors, anxiety might be the culprit.

How CBD Works for Anxiety
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant. Unlike THC which is present in weed for humans, it won’t get your dog “high.” Instead, CBD interacts with your dog’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which helps regulate mood, sleep, appetite, and stress.
Studies suggest that CBD may promote calmness by influencing serotonin receptors in the brain, often referred to as the “feel-good” chemical. This can help reduce the physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety in dogs.
Benefits of CBD for Anxious Dogs
Here’s how CBD can help alleviate anxiety:
- Calming Effects: CBD helps relax your dog without sedation, allowing them to feel comfortable in stressful situations like car rides, thunderstorms, or staying home alone.
- Improved Sleep: If anxiety disrupts your dog’s sleep, CBD can promote better rest.

Tips for Using CBD Safely
- Start Low and Go Slow: Begin with the lowest recommended dose based on your dog’s weight, then adjust as needed. Good products should have dosage recommendations on the actual bottle or bag as well!
- Monitor Your Dog: Watch for improvements in behavior or any side effects like drowsiness or upset stomach.
- Consult Your Vet: Always check with your veterinarian before starting your dog on CBD, especially if they’re on other medications.
Real-Life Success Story: My Mochi!
As a dog trainer myself, I have tons of stories where CBD helped dogs, especially the ones with intense separation anxiety that needed something to help with the training.
But my favorite case is with my own pup, Mochi! When Mochi was around 2, he used to have anxiety when riding in the car, showing signs like panting and not getting comfortable. He wasn’t experiencing the anxiety before then, so I was kind of caught off guard, but after doing lots of research I decided to try CBD.
In combination with training (mostly desensitization and counterconditioning), Mochi got so much better with a few weeks of using CBD whenever we had to go in the car!
The best part was: he was fully aware and totally the same as before the CBD, just not anxious, and that’s why I love CBD. It didn’t make him drowsy or confused or weird, he was simply more comfortable in the car! Since he’s so good in the car now, we have even driven 20 hours to Norway four times, which is Mochi’s favorite vacation spot! 🙂

Final Thoughts
CBD can be a game-changer for dogs struggling with anxiety and stress. With its natural calming effects, it’s a safe and effective option worth considering. However, as with any supplement, it’s crucial to choose high-quality products and consult your veterinarian.
By providing your dog with the relief they need, you can ensure they live a happier, more relaxed life.
